Interview with Fabian Balmer, Cham

How did you hear about SISEC?

Fred was once my coach and he gave me a business card.

Are you here primarily because of the sport or the language?

Primarily I am here to playing hockey.

What was your first impression of Canada and Canadians?

Even though I knew that Canada is a big country, I was surprised how big it is.

The Canadians are very friendly people.

Was SISEC helpful in getting you used to your new place?

Yes, SISEC showed me around at first, but after a while a found my way around myself..

There are always four students sharing a house. How do you think of the idea to live in a house?

I think that’s a great idea. But one drawback is that all speak Swiss German.. That’s not the best for study English because we tend have conversations in Swiss instead of English..

How old were you when you began playing hockey, and how often do you train per week?

I was 4/5 years old. In Switzerland I practiced 5-6 times per week.

Is there a big difference between Swiss hockey and Canadian hockey?

Yes, I think so. Everything is faster and more intense. I don’t have anyexperiences as of yet, but I expect that the game itsgoing to be played harder than in Switzerland.

You will spend your time in Banff at the Hockey Academy. What do you expect from your stay? What are your goals?

Of course my goal is to become better and to get lots of playing experience during my time in Banff. And also one of my goals is to improve my English skills.

How important is sport in your life?

I couldn’t be without sports. I need sports, doesn’t matter what kind of sports I play, I just need something to do.

How do you like the FOCUS International Language School?

I think Focus is a good school. I enjoyed being there even though it was just there for a short time. What I especially enjoyed was that the classes at FOCUS are very small.
