Interview with Florian Murer, Geltwil

How did you hear of SISEC?

Through Dani Hüni of the PGS Goalie School in Switzerland

Are you here at SISEC because of the sports or the language education?

More because of the sports, but I find the combination of it great.

Before you heard about SISEC, have you thought about a language stay?

Yes, and I always wanted to come to Canada for that. But before hearing of SISEC, I was not sure as to were in Canada to go.

What was your first impression of Canada and ist people?

The people here are very friendly and Alberta is absolutely beautiful.

Was SISEC helpful in getting you settled in?

Absolutely! SISEC showed me around and within a short period of time I was able to find my way around.

There are 4 students sharing the SISEC house. Do you like this living solution for the students?

As with everything in life it has advantages and disadvantages An advantage is definitely that you have immediately contact to people that already have lived in Calgary for a while. On arrival my English was very basic, so being able to speak german helped me a lot.

How old where you when you began playing hockey? And how often do you practice per week at home?

I started playing hockey at age 14. In Switzerland I practice 2 to 3 times weekly.

How difficult is it to adjust from Swiss- to Canadian hockey?

It’s not that big of an adjustment. You get used to the small rink very quickly.

What do you expect of you stay at SISEC?

Language wise I would like to be able to have conversations with others without having difficulties understanding or answering.

With respect to hockey, I’d like to improve enough, so I can possible play for a 2nd division team in Switzerland in the near future.

What have you experienced playing hockey here in Canada?

The pace of the game is much faster here and most players are very good skaters and puck handlers. I’ve learned a lot and made great friends.

How important is sports in your life?

Sports is a big part of my life. It gives me perfect balance to my everyday life. Most of my friends play hockey as well.

How do you like the FOCUS International Language School?

I’m enjoying it a lot. The teachers are great and I’ve made friends with many FOCUS students. I’ve also improved my English a lot.

What has been your most positive experience since you have arrived?

I went to an NHL playoff game of the Calgary Flames at the Saddledome. The atmosphere was outstanding. Everybody was dressed in red...the noise....it was unbelievable!

What do miss most from home?

Family and my motorbike.
