Interview with Marc Zollinger, Dietlikon

How did you hear about SISEC?

I read the add in the Magazine “20 Minuten“, and got some more information on the Website. I was impressed with what I learned about SISEC and I contacted Fred Voser.

Did you plan a language stay before you heard about SISEC?

Yes, I did. I had also already looked around but I didn’t want to be several months without my sports training. The combination school and sports, which SISEC offers, convinced me quickly.

What was your first impression of Canada and Canadians?

The Canadians are very friendly and open. I was only a little bit disappointed when I arrived in Calgary and everything was brown. I expected a lot of snow here because Canada is famous for its cold weather and skiing in the Rockies.

Was SISEC helpful in getting you used to your new place?

Yes, they told me everything I needed to know. One is naturally always thrown in the cold water and must find one’s way around. I got used to living here quite quickly.

What are you expecting from your language stay? What is your goal?

My goal is definitely to improve my English since it is clearly necessary nowadays at almost any job.  As well, I take sports very seriously and it is more than just fun for me. I want to remain active and work on my technique while on my language stay.

You are also here to play volleyball and to swim. What’s your experience with these two so far?

The leagues/teams are organized differently here than in Switzerland. Here I do not play in a league with regular practices and games. I play each time with a different group of people who just have fun playing volleyball twice a week. It is nevertheless a challenge, since there are often many very good players in our group. Their skill level is approximately the same as the players on my team in Switzerland. Also swimming is fun here. I really like the 50m pool in the Talisman center.

How important is sport in your life?

For me, sports mean balance, challenge and promotion of the team spirit. I started practicing sports as a child and couldn’t be without it anymore. It’s always been part of my life. Team sports, especially, teach good lessons for life.

How do you like the FOCUS International Language School?

The school is good. I am in a small class with only five students. There are two Swiss, two Koreans and a Frenchman. My favorite class is “Block C”, current events. The topics are always interesting and we exchange our opinions and thoughts.

Were you able to make friends through school or sports while you’ve been here?

Yes. Especially with other students and teachers. I will definitely stay in contact with many of them.

What has been your most positive experience since you arrived?

Getting to know people from all around the world. Also, the events organized by the school are great. We’ve visited museums, saw a Lacrosse game, and were able to cheer on the Calgary Hitmen at many of their games in the Saddle Dome. These are all things which I would not or could not do in Switzerland.  My day on a snowboard at Lake Louise is another experience I will never forget. That was great!
