Interview with Raphael Maget, Zurich

How did you hear about SISEC?

My mother met someone in Church and told him about my plans for a language stay. He gave her the link to the SISEC Website.

Did you plan a language stay before you heard about SISEC?

Yes. At first, I wanted to go to Australia , but I decided for Canada because I’ve been here before and I would really like to learn Canadian English.

What was your first impression of Canada and Canadians?

Canadians are very friendly and helpful. If my English was better, I think it would be easier to make friends out here. The language is still a bit of a barrier.

Was SISEC helpful in getting you used to your new place?

Yes they were. I don’t like holidays or trips where each step is planned. SISEC leaves me the freedom to do my things but if I need help, there’s always someone around. This gives me a safe feeling.

What are you expecting from your language stay? What is your goal?

My goal is definitely to learn the language. I’m going to continue my English lessons in Switzerland and even get a certificate. Swiss companies like certificates.
But first, I want to be able to speak English for traveling, because with English you can survive pretty much all over the world.

You are also here to play Hockey and for Strength Training. What’s your experience so far?

The Strength Training is about the same as in Switzerland . It is different with the hockey. Here they don’t have leagues like in Switzerland . Either you can make it to the top leagues here or you just play on a Shinny Hockey team.
I hope I’ll get the chance to learn more here. But it is definitely fun!

How important is sport in your life?

It is very important. I think the discipline you need to practice sports helps also in other areas of your life. Like at work or learning/studying. I can’t see how so many young people just hang around and are lazy. To me, this is wasted time.

You have already been to Vancouver and Quebec and you’re planning to go to Edmonton and Los Angeles . How well did SISEC do at organizing your travel?

The support is sensational, and I couldn’t have done it without SISEC’s help. Well, not with paying much more (laughs)! Fred even organized the ticket for my brother who’s coming to visit me between Christmas and New Year!

How do you like the FOCUS International Language School ?

The school is great. The teachers find interesting ways to teach and its fun to learn! The only trouble I have is understanding my classmates from Asia because of their accent.

What has been your most positive experience since you arrived?

Definitely Fred’s help with my bookings. It is a big difference to chat with people and to actually book a flight. I think it is important to understand everything in a travel office (laughs). I’m very thankful I didn’t have to put up with all of that on my own!
