Interview with Stephan Peterhans, Jonen

How did you hear about SISEC?

I read about it in the forum of the Federation of Swiss Bob Website.

Did you plan a language stay before you heard about SISEC?

Yes, I did.

What was your first impression of Canada and Canadians?

My first impression was great. Canadians are very helpful and friendly. Whenever I have to ask something they take their time to explain and are very interested about where I’m from.

Was SISEC helpful in getting you used to your new place?

I got a great introduction! I learned about the differences in traffic and shopping and got to see the Canada Olympic Park – SISEC was very helpful. I really enjoyed the Hockey game Fred took me to. It was such a big event, even though it was not even an NHL Game. Unbelievable!

What are you expecting from your language stay? What is your goal?

To improve my English and to make connections in the Bob scene. I have been very successful in both so far…

You are also here because of the Bob and Skeleton World Championships. How well did the Swiss team do? Are you happy with the results?

As a Federation functionary person I usually get to see the whole thing behind the scenes. It is very interesting to see how our team works together. The organization, the training, food supply, Physiotherapists/Doctors – to experience the group dynamic and to see how close together they have to live is great!

I’m very satisfied with the results: Bronze in the 2-Man Bob Sleigh, Silver in the Women’s Skeleton and Gold in the Men’s Skeleton!

How important is sport in your life?

Sports are very crucial and valuable, a great reconciliation to the office work and great for health! I think Sports is a very important part of our society and a great tool to train discipline.

How do you like the FOCUS International Language School?

I really like the school and the teachers are great. The interesting part is to get to know different cultures, specially the Japanese and Koreans. It is a loose atmosphere and we have barely any homework. I personally would have preferred more demanding and firm lessons but probably also because I am only here for three short weeks. But for students who stay here for a few months, the school and the way they teach is perfect!

What has been your most positive experience since you arrived?

I left with a deep impression of the “gold digger” atmosphere here! The skyscrapers, the streets of up to four lanes and all these huge shopping malls. A city who goes through a building boom and won’t stop growing…
